Naturopathy State Laws

Please check with your state for any updates to this information, if you are planning to practice traditional naturopathy.

States that license exclusive scope of practice and Naturopathic Doctor title protection:

• CT, NH, VT, ME, OR, WA, AZ, UT, AK, HI

• This means that you cannot use the word Naturopathy or Naturopathic Doctor without being licensed and going to one of the 4 year degree granting schools. This training includes the use of drugs, minor surgery and child birth.

States that license without exclusive scopes of practice but title
protection:

• CA & MT

• This means that you can practice “Naturopathy” and be called a “Naturopathic Practitioner” without attending a 4 year university and must follow the rules and regulations in SB 577. (see link below) You may not use drugs, minor surgery or perform child birth.

States that register Naturopath’s with title protection and without the use of drugs, childbirth or minor surgery.

• KS & DC

States that expressly prohibit the practice of Naturopathy.

• TN & SC

NOTE: FL has a license law, but has not issued a license since 1959.

If a state is not listed, it is because there are no laws or regulations regarding naturopathy or naturopathic medicine.
